Y-series non-fullerene acceptors have shown a unique behavior of heavy-atom-free control of intersystem crossing (ISC) rates. However, their structure-property relation still remains elusive, limiting their broader use. Here, we investigated crystalline-motif-dependent photophysical behaviors of them and demonstrated their multi-chromorphoric natures. Solvent diffusion method was employed to synthesize various motifs of single crystals, and their optical properties were monitored at cryogenic temperatures. Interestingly, they showed unconventional growth and retardation of bathochromic features upon temperature lowering, which becomes far more pronounced when triplet-sensitized. This study also examines long-lived polaron generation from such long-lived triplet-like species at the heterointerface in solid state. Possible future applications include devices requiring prolonged exciton lifetimes and delayed recombination such as photonic sensors and photonic in-memory computing. |
